Blockchain-Based Voting Test: The Crypto Valley of Switzerland Set to Vote Using Blockchain

Swiss City – Zug, residents are set to use the eID system of the city to vote this month using their mobile devices as part of the test of a blockchain-based voting – according to the SBC (Swiss Broadcasting Corporation). From the 25th of June to the 1st of July, residents are to download an application to register for the voting exercise.

The city, which is a home to what is referred to as “Crypto Valley” as a result of its several blockchain startups, established its electronic ID system in November last year, and it already boasts of 200 users. Zug already accepts digital currencies to pay for goods and services in the city.

Issues to Be Addressed By the Voters

Voters will be asked if they think digital IDs should be used to borrow books in the library as well as pay for parking tickets. They will also have to give their opinion on whether digital identifications should be used for future referendums. Since the pool is just a test, the results won’t be mandatory. They are just trying to find out if blockchain technology can be used on a broader scale.

The city launched the digital IDs last fall to give electronic access for council services on a test basis, and this gave participants full access over their data. The voting pilot will be the first digital polling test of the nation. The government of Switzerland wants about 66 percent of the cantons of in the nation to offer digital voting by the end of 2019.

The Expansion of eID Systems

The Zug digital identification system isn’t the only system like that in the country. Another electronic ID system in Canton Schaffhausen, which was launched with the help of Procivis, isn’t on a blockchain. This system, which will launch after a test which began in December last year, provides smartphones access to child protection, road traffic, tax, as well as other departments. It will also grant access to businesses.
