- Cardano to commence the release of new updates to the Shelley testnet
- Issues with the initial Cardano testnet
The founder and CEO of IOHK, Charles Hoskinson has confirmed that new updates will be released to Cardano’s Shelley testnet regularly. Hoskinson said this after the rough start the Cardano Shelley testnet had. The Shelley incentivized testnet, which indicates the commencement of Cardano’s decentralization phase, encounter some challenges during its initial release. According to Hoskinson, he termed it the “learning experience.”
In the official statement released, Hoskinson confirmed that the initial release of the Shelley testnet was “a bit rocky.” Also, he explained how the team liable for providing the first iteration of the testnet had been working effortlessly for “four months straight.” He added that after alleviating the initial testnet, the team members had taken a well-deserved vacation.
Thus, recorded issues and bugs in the testnet were left unattended to until after the end of the festive season. Hoskinson stated:
“Everyone is back at work after a few weeks for the holidays. The Rust team should deliver a network patch for the ITN sometime this upcoming week. And then business as usual with lots of weekly production. Thanks for your patience throughout the holidays.”
Going further, Hoskinson reviewed how the IOHK team are investigating ways of getting new startups users to the blockchain, in a bid to compete strongly with other blockchains like Ethereum.
“We must have competitive offerings within the Cardano ecosystem for those who wish to issue assets and a compelling reason why our ledger is a better ledger to issue tokens. We’ve had numerous discussions with those who have ERC-20 tokens, and we have some very good ideas to make Cardano uniquely competitive.”
In Cardano’s bid to aid adoption and contend with competitors, the blockchain company is bringing data providers and oracle providers to the Cardano blockchain. Using Chainlink as a reference, Hoskinso claims there is the need for an oracle standard for Cardano.
Issues With the Initial Cardano Testnet
After the release of the Shelley incentivized testnet, several users reported issues they were having with the testnet. Some of the issues include extended syncing time, bad incentives for smaller pool operators, and pool operators who were cheating the system for personal gains.

Nonetheless, Hoskinson has come out to clear the air and point out that the whole aim of an incentivized testnet was to trap bugs and misappropriation of the protocol ahead of a full live release. He added that such issues were to be expected. Currently, the Cardano blockchain is going through a complete third-party security audit, which will offer an enhanced and openly available appraisal of the blockchain’s code. Finally, Hoskinson declared that the last upgrades to Shelley were looming ahead of the launch of the fully decentralized mainnet.
