A digital identification card that utilizes the ultimate secure blockchain technology of IOTA (referred to as Tangle) will be issued this year in Taipei – the capital city of Taiwan.
The Aim of this Development
The digital identification card is aimed at making the level of security much stronger and help bring identity fraud and theft to the barest minimum. The venture is a partnership between the Department of Information Technology of Taipei and BiiLabs – a distributed ledger technology (DTL) focused startup.
Jim Huang’s Comment
A digital currency enthusiast and scientist – Jim Huang, tweeted: “To comply with the framework of #GDPR, #TangleID is adapting uPort elements into the $IOTA platform for the management of self-sovereign identity on which #Taipei Smart City Project Management Office (TPMO) would create different applications. Look forward to mass deployment this year.”
The Expectation of the City
Taipei is expected to be a distributed ledger technology city very soon. The launch of the electronic identification cards based on Tangle is the first initiative to adopt and utilize digital currency technology in daily lives.
Tangle, the technology of IOTA, is being tested to manage and assess the quality of air throughout the city. Small sensors that keep track of pollution are developed by Air Box project. These sensors would be installed in homes and their data would be analyzed and recorded for future references by Tangle.
Wei-bin Lee’s Comment
The commissioner of the Department of Information Technology of the city – Wei-bin Lee, said: “with the technology of IOTA and the city of Taipei always thinking ahead, this collaboration is a strategic move to introduce the new era of smart cities to the citizens of Taipei.”
Taipei is not the only city to take advantage of blockchain technology in their city. Dubai is also attempting to create a brilliant city of Mecca by 2020, and they plan to take advantage of the distributed ledger technology too.
