Cryptocurrency and the underlying blockchain technology have made another breakthrough into mainstream financial industry. The Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) has made a decision to include blockchain and cryptocurrency topics in its three-level program. Candidates in level one and level two will have blockchain and cryptocurrency as part of their curriculum from next year. Materials for the exam will be made available in August. Blockchain and cryptocurrency topics will be taught as part of a new department known as Fintech in Investment Management. The Charlottesville, Va., based CFA decided to add these topics in response to the ever increasing interest in blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies.

As Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies get popular, they have also become integrated in the mainstream financial industry. Currently, leading financial firms and trading houses are trading Bitcoin Futures with more Wall Street professionals investing in cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology. While the cryptocurrency industry has been having a rough time this year, there have been many real world applications of blockchain in the global financial industry. The managing director of general education and curriculum at the CFA Institute, Stephen Horan, said that cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology are here to stay.

Candidates will have access to the materials on cryptocurrency, blockchain technology as well as other Fintech topics like artificial intelligence, automated trading and machine learning. Eventually, the intersection of cryptocurrencies and economics will be added to the curriculum according to Horan. This means that those who intend to take the exam and become CFAs must understand how cryptocurrencies work.

One of the candidates who is now working as an intern fund analyst said that the material for cryptocurrency and blockchain technology will be useful especially for people like him who want to contribute to the expansion and adoption of cryptocurrencies. He noted that the focus material will cover how Blockchain technology and Fintech will improve the financial sector. The topics will also cover CFA readings about work ethics.
