How The Integration of Blockchain Technology In Water Rights Management Affects Residents Of California

A few days ago, the lawmakers in Colorado filed a bill that was focused on the integration of blockchain technology in water management rights for its residents. This week, the team in charge of California water management rights started exploring the integration of blockchain technology. However, the drought that led to statewide water restrictions may make the application of blockchain technology in California water right management tricky.

In a film titled Water & Power: A California Heist”, the current situation in California was examined. It depicted how some corporate landowners took advantage of the system created by the state using it to gain control of water while the local homeowners suffered. They are working on a blockchain based system that integrates IoT sensors in water pumps. This may be a good idea in a state that has suffered serious water shortage since 2006. This shouldn’t be considered as a surprise, as in the 20th century, California suffered a nine and right year-long drought.

With this project, scientists will use IoT sensors and blockchain technology to track the usage of groundwater in real-time. This would be down across major rivers. This will reduce the pressures attached to purchasing table water and manage water supply.

Apart from its application in water rights management, blockchain technology can also help in the supply chain management of the water market sector. It can help in the administration because it improves trust and transparency within systems. It will be even more effective when it is combined with artificial intelligence to provide an efficient interface. An AI-blockchain, in theory, will be capable of identifying changes in weather conditions long before they happen. After identifying these issues, it suggests contingency plans, locates buyers and sellers who will deal with the water before the storm comes. The California blockchain water management system is also going to have a blockchain logistics system for tracking.

A blockchain system will integrate trust when it is used to keep records. When amendments are made on the system, everyone would see them. They will be able to keep track of the groundwater that different entities use.
