Remittance Is At Record High

According to a report from the World Bank, remittance flows reached record highs in 2018. Up to $529 billion was transferred to low- and middle-income economies. This report shows a 9.6% rise from the 2017 figures. Globally, the figures for remittances for 2018 was $689 billion from the 2017 report which was $633 billion.

The database also shows that the cost of sending the funds are higher than they should be. A $200 sum is sent at 7% in 2019. Banks charge 11% for cross border transactions. Companies like Ripple can help cut down these costs before 2030.

The U.S economy has seen a 10% increase in remittance in the Latin American region. Three countries in this region receive the highest amount of payments. While Chile doesn’t fall into this list, it leads in internet access.

More than 72% of Chileans have internet access. Sadly, more than 71% of the populace lack access to international payment credit cards. The most popular form of payment is cash-based and some use local cards for payment. This move by the company is a good one as the country is ripe for disruption. It also has the ingredients needed for success.
