- Ethereum shifts Istanbul hard fork activation date
- Istanbul activation would be in two phases
- Phase one of Istanbul activation would be in October while phase two would be in November
Ethereum News Today – The Ethereum Foundation is working on something that could impact the network positively. Yesterday, the community manager at Ethereum Foundation – Hudson Jameson – announced that the Istanbul hard fork would be activated on testnet Ropsten on or around October 2 this year. The core developers of Ethereum finalized the list of EIPs (Ethereum Improvement Proposals) at an All Core Devs Meeting on August 15, 2019. The ‘All core Devs Meeting’ is a technical meeting intended to bring together several Ethereum teams that play key roles in determining the direction of the protocol.

Istanbul Hard Fork Will Be Executed in Two Phases
According to the previous meeting they had, which comprises of various set of Ethereum stakeholders, the new hard fork would be executed in two phases. The first phase would consist of six Ethereum Improvement Protocols; estimated to go live on the Mainnet of Ethereum in October. The second phase of the execution consists of those Ethereum Improvement Protocols, such as the proposal to make Ethereum more ASIC-resistant by moving to a Programmatic Proof of Work consensus algorithm, that require further deliberation and testing from the core developers.
During the last meeting, a core developer – Peter Szilagyi – who is the team leader at the Ethereum Foundation, said that activating Istanbul phase one many need to be moved further. Some people wanted the phase one to be activated on the 4th of September. The core developer wants the date to be moved in order to give the teams working on Ethereum clients more time to run all the required tests. They need more time to test the implementation of the agreed six Ethereum Improvement Protocols before they can roll out the changes on the testnet. The core developer’s wish came through during the core dev meeting they had yesterday.
Ethereum Core Developers Shifts Istanbul Hard Fork Phase One to October
During the core dev team meeting yesterday, Jameson commented on the activation date for the first phase of Istanbul hard fork. Jameson who is also the COO, Co-founder and Blockchain Lead at Oaken said:
“Anyone listening and those who don’t know how this works, we pick a block number that we estimate to be around the 2nd of October. However, that might be one or two days behind or forward from that date based on how fast blocks are produced between now and then.”
The activation on the Mainnet of Ethereum would now be somewhere in November. It would take place after the Devcon 5 conference, which would hold from 8th to 11th of October in Osaka, Japan.
