Blockchain Technology: Lufthansa comes on board; partners in ICO with Winding Tree

Aviation giant, Lufthansa group has announced a partnership with blockchain-based travel distribution Start-up, Winding Tree. The Swiss Start-up is a B2B platform, a decentralized alternative to the current concentrated travel distribution landscape.

This is smart thinking and smart business for Lufthansa who believes that in the future, airlines, hotels and other travel service providers will offer their services on Winding Tree’s platform, and companies interested in content will only connect to the B2B blockchain-distributed digital marketplace to present specific offers tailored to their customers’ needs. This will result in a large number of new apps for travelers, who will then be able to book Lufthansa Group flights via the offer that best suits their preferences.

Dr. Christian Langer (Chief Digital Officer, Lufthansa Group) has stated that “To us, Winding Tree is a strong candidate to turn today’s understanding of distribution upside down.”

Lufthansa joins the list of firms in the travel Industry taking to blockchain technology. Webjet (partnered by Microsoft) led the way with an ethereum-based blockchain online booking platform. TUI Group earlier transferred its hotel inventory into a Blockchain.

Lufthansa will support Winding Tree in an ongoing presale of Líf tokens ahead of an Initial Coin Offering ICO on November 1. Líf is an ERC20 compatible token and is the ‘fuel’ of the platform.

Lufthansa Integrated Solutions, a subsidiary of the Lufthansa group has plans to pioneer a blockchain-based Aircraft maintenance system. This is part of a wholesale Initiative, Blockchain for Aviation (BC4A). They hope to compile potential applications of blockchain and create joint standards for its use.

“The goal is to bring together all fields of expertise and to collectively sound out the potentials of blockchain technology.”
